Tencent Holdings Ltd. has surged to the forefront of China’s AI sector with the rapid success of its “WorkBuddy” assistant, a development investors hope will finally bridge the company’s competitive gap in the artificial intelligence race ahead of Wednesday’s earnings report.
A Potential Catalyst for Tencent’s Valuation
The tech giant’s stock, which has significantly lagged behind AI pure-plays like Z.AI Co., is currently hovering near record-low valuations. Market analysts are now looking for concrete performance data on WorkBuddy to serve as a long-awaited catalyst for a sustained share price recovery, following a minor rebound driven by capital shifts from South Korean and Taiwanese hardware firms.
“If they start to disclose encouraging metrics on WorkBuddy, I think that will help change people’s perception about Tencent,” said Jiong Shao, an analyst at Barclays Capital Inc. in New York. Shao recently upgraded Tencent to a top pick for the first time in five years, citing the company’s superior long-term potential in the AI landscape.
Dominating the Workplace AI Frontier
Since its launch in March—a strategic response to the market frenzy ignited by OpenClaw—WorkBuddy has quickly become China’s most popular AI workplace assistant. According to data from Analysys cited by 36kr, the platform reached 20.97 million monthly visits by June, outpacing ByteDance’s Trae and Alibaba’s QoderWork.
The battle for office-based AI agents is intensifying, as companies recognize the massive potential of the white-collar workforce compared to niche developer tools. Tencent is aggressively prioritizing WorkBuddy to fend off heavy competition from Baidu Inc. and MoonShot AI.
The WeChat Advantage
Morningstar Inc. senior equity analyst Ivan Su highlights a critical competitive edge: integration. “If we were to find one thing within Tencent’s AI strategy that’s worth highlighting, I think WorkBuddy is the go-to for investors,” Su noted, pointing out that the agent’s seamless integration into the ubiquitous WeChat ecosystem creates a “stickiness” that makes it exceptionally difficult for rivals to displace.
Financial Outlook and Market Performance
As the company prepares for its earnings call, investors are scrutinizing capital expenditure plans and their impact on profitability. Projections for the June quarter suggest Tencent will report revenue growth of nearly 10% alongside a 5% increase in profits. While the company’s shares have recovered roughly 17% from their June lows, they remain down 20% for the year, contrasting with the 11% decline in the Hang Seng Tech Index.
With a market capitalization of $557 billion, Tencent’s expansive ecosystem—spanning social networking, gaming, e-commerce, and digital payments—provides a unique foundation for its AI ambitions. Barclays’ Shao remains bullish on the company’s trajectory, stating, “Tencent may be the only company in the whole world that can have a very good general purpose AI agent. Their strategic resource allocation to WorkBuddy has given it a competitive advantage over rivals.”
