Clarus Q2 Earnings: Outdoor Growth Offsets Adventure Slump

Clarus Corporation (NASDAQ: CLAR) reported a 1.6% increase in consolidated second-quarter sales to $56.2 million for the period ending June 30, driven by a strong performance in its Outdoor segment that balanced ongoing demand challenges within its Adventure division in North America and Australia.

Outdoor Segment Leads Performance

The Outdoor business emerged as the primary growth engine, with sales rising 8.5% on a reported basis. Excluding the impact of the divested PIEPS business, revenue climbed 9.1%. Black Diamond Equipment President Neil Fiske noted that the Mountain, Climb, and Apparel categories—which account for 95% of the segment’s revenue—grew by 9.5% collectively.

Apparel has become a core strategic focus for the company. Inline Apparel sales surged 22.9%, while the company successfully reduced markdown activity, with sales of clearance merchandise falling 61%. This shift toward a premium, full-price model helped improve the Outdoor gross margin to 36.5% (excluding a $6.1 million tariff refund), a 160-basis-point increase over the previous year.

Adventure Division Faces Market Headwinds

Conversely, the Adventure segment saw an 11.9% decline in sales, as management struggled to gain traction in North American markets. While Australia outperformed forecasts despite inflationary pressures, the segment found success elsewhere, reporting double-digit revenue growth in France, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

To streamline operations, the company reduced its Adventure headcount by 20% and lowered its cost base by 11%. Strategic efforts to bolster the portfolio included the acquisition of assets from ONWRD Supply Co., which adds high-margin in-vehicle accessories to the lineup.

Financial Outlook and Strategic Review

Clarus maintained its full-year 2026 revenue guidance of $245 million to $255 million. However, the company raised its adjusted EBITDA forecast to a range of $12 million to $13 million, up from the previous $3 million to $5 million estimate. This upward revision is largely attributed to the $6 million tariff refund and the anticipated elimination of approximately $2 million in legal expenses.

The company remains in a stable liquidity position with no debt and $28.9 million in cash. During the quarter, Clarus repurchased 153,331 shares for approximately $448,000, leaving $42.4 million available under its existing repurchase authorization.

Legal Investigations Concluded

Executive Chairman Warren Kanders confirmed that the Department of Justice officially closed its investigation into Black Diamond’s reporting obligations regarding avalanche transceivers on June 4. Additionally, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) concluded its separate inquiry into product recall compliance without taking further action.

As Clarus looks ahead, the company continues to evaluate strategic alternatives to unlock shareholder value. Financial adviser Jefferies is assisting in this process, which could involve the potential sale of all or part of the business, though management has stated they will not provide further commentary on these deliberations at this time.
